Endoscopic Sinus Dilation is a procedure where a small balloon or dilator is used to dilate the openings to the sinuses to restore patency and allow the sinuses to drain and be ventilated. The procedure typically takes 30-45 minutes and can be performed in the office. Unlike traditional sinus surgery, there is no tissue removal or destruction of the sinus mucosa and cilia. Once the balloon or dilator is used the sinus opening is remodeled and the balloon or dilator is removed. This creates a permanent opening with minimal trauma, bleeding and scarring. As a result, the post procedure recovery is usually very short with most patients returning to full activities in 24 hours. Bleeding, discomfort and scarring are also at a minimum.
